Why you should do 'nothing' with your dog

The piece of the training puzzle you 'might' be missing if you want an adult dog that's calm in public. Dogs are masters at forming associations. The beach means ball throwing, the vet office means needles, grandparents' house means extra snacks etc. This talent of theirs has the potential to work in our favour if we're aware of it, ooorrrr it has the potential to work against us if we're not paying attention. Frustration is the emotion behind many of the 'annoying' behaviours we get calls about, and it's typically because the dog has learnt to associate a certain context or situation with something when they were a puppy - and then as the dog gets bigger and louder we have changed our expectations of their behaviour and they're left frustrated.
